Enquiry Upon Results (appeals)

After the issue of results in July, students may wish to appeal a result.  There are three categories of appeal for IB results.

EUR Cat 1

This is a re-mark of all a candidate’s externally-assessed components for a subject. This means that you cannot for example request to have economics paper 2 remarked but not paper 1. If there is EUR Cat1 for economics, all the papers for economics sat by an individual students are remarked.  This year, for subjects where all the student Internal Assessments (IAs) were submitted for marking (most subjects), the IAs will be remarked as part of the EUR1.

The remark must be requested by the IB Office in the school. A result may go down as well as up as a result of a EUR Cat1.  Because the grade can go down, written consent is required from the students. If a student is 18 years old or over they must send the consent themselves. In the case of students under 18 years old at the time of the request, their parent or legal guardian must request the re-mark.

There is a fee of €88 for this remark which is refunded in the case of a grade (not mark) change.

The chart below shows the average change in marks (not grade) globally, as a result of EUR1 requests in 2015 (blue) and 2016 (red)

EUR Cat 2

This is the return of externally assessed papers. Students may request to have their marked papers returned. There is a fee for each paper. With the advent of online markings this has become less popular as examiners are focused on giving a mark for each section and not marking questions right or wrong, nor do they give comments. It is not uncommon for a marked paper to arrive back with just the marks for each question on the cover sheet and no other annotations on the script. The IB do not necessarily send a marking scheme with the returned scripts and this may not be available for months after the exam.

Below is a quote from the IB about EUR Cat 2

A returned script may contain useful comments from the allocated examiner: however, this can’t be guaranteed because examiners are not required to write comments when marking candidates’ work. This is because the purpose of summative assessment is to produce an accurate reflection of a candidate’s performance at the end of his or her study and the emphasis for examiners is to make sure the work is marked correctly, rather than to provide notes and recommendations on the work itself.

EUR Cat 3

This is a re-moderation of the internal assessment work for a level in a subject.  A re-moderation will only be undertaken in cases where the mean of the candidates’ moderated internal assessment marks differs from the mean of their raw marks (the marks awarded by the teacher) by at least 15% of the maximum mark for the component. (this is very unusual, and we cannot typically submit EUR Cat 3 requests)

Note also that re-moderation is not available for language A: literature SL school supported self-taught candidates.

A re-moderation will not normally be undertaken by the examiner who was the original moderator of the sample work. However, in small entry subjects there may be some exceptions to this principle. The time taken to undertake a re-moderation can be dependent on the availability of examiners. However, the IB will make every effort to achieve this service in the shortest possible time.

The fee for this service will not be refunded on the occasions when one or more grades are raised. This is because of the significant costs incurred by the IB in implementing this service.

The grades of students cannot decrease as a result of EUR Cat 3 and because of this consent from candidates is not required.
