Gonzaga Chess Classic Report
Felix Jordan (Second Year) and Fionn Lynch (First Year) played in the Gonzaga Charity Chess Classic in aid of Habitat for Humanity over the weekend of 26-27 January.
There were over 200 entrants including four Grandmasters and three St Andrew’s Alumni, FIDE Master Tom O’Gorman, Alex Byrne and Alice O’Gorman.
Felix was in the middle section of three, scoring 3/6 for a gain in his rating and Fionn was in the third section, scoring a creditable 2/6 in his first such outing.
Tom O'Gorman came joint third in the top Masters section on 3.5/5 securing a draw against a Grandmaster. Both Alex Byrne and Alice O'Gorman scored 2/5 with Alice beating a former Irish Champion.
The Masters was won by GM Matthew Turner – winner of the inaugural St. Andrew’s Classic in 2017 and our host at the annual Millfield International Competition. We hope to see Matthew at the St. Andrew’s 2019 Chess Classic in September.
