Group 2

Group 2 Language Acquisition:  English B, French B, German B , Spanish B Higher  and Standard Level

AIMS

The Language acquisition programme emphasises the concepts of communication and creative thinking, both written and spoken. The medium of instruction is primarily the language concerned and this offers an intense and rewarding linguistic experience. Knowledge of another language is not only useful; it also contributes to the ‘internationalism’ of students. It develops understanding, tolerance and an understanding and appreciation of the cultural differences.

COURSE CONTENT

This course involves the regular study of the language itself, its structures, its idioms and vocabulary, not only through the use of textbooks but also by using material such as newspapers, magazines, films and the Internet. The course will be thematic and some literature will be incorporated at higher level and may also be included at standard level.

ASSESSMENT

Internal

School-based assessment (individual oral assessment)    25%

External

Written examination/listening comprehension                   75%

REQUIREMENTS

Three to five years prior study of the language. Please note that native speakers do not qualify for a Language Acquisition course. For this purpose we would categorise students as native speakers in a language if that has been the language of instruction for them in secondary school, or if they have lived for a considerable period of time in that country.

Group 2 Language Acquisition ab initio (Standard Level only). Spanish or French ab initio.

AIMS

This course is designed for students who have insufficient prior knowledge to follow the Language B course. Ab initio is only open to genuine beginners with little or no knowledge of the language or who have had proven difficulties with language acquisition.  The course aims at developing the student’s ability to communicate in speech and in writing in order to deal adequately with familiar and practical needs.

COURSE CONTENT

Students will be introduced to the culture of the country. Original material, newspaper articles and radio and video programmes are incorporated into the programme, making it a challenging and intellectually stimulating course.

ASSESSMENT
