Physical Education Curriculum
The Physical Education programme at St Andrew’s College Junior School provides children with dynamic learning opportunities through movement, contributing to their overall development and encouraging students to lead full, active, and healthy lives.
The Irish Primary Physical Education Curriculum offers a well-balanced range of activities. Over the course of an academic year—and across a child’s time in Primary school—pupils develop skills in Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Aquatics, and Outdoor and Adventure activities. Further information on curriculum objectives can be found [here].
In P.E. and Games lessons, we prioritise enjoyment, play, and age-appropriate skill development. In the upper Primary years, students are given the opportunity to participate in competitive sports. We have strong boys’ and girls’ teams in hockey, rugby, and basketball, and also compete in tennis, athletics, volleyball, soccer, and swimming.
Assessment
Assessment in PE is designed to encourage personal improvement and development. It takes place within class time through individual performance-based tests. These fun, engaging challenges help students monitor their own progress and celebrate personal milestones. Assessments include timed motor skill tests, cross-country runs, agility courses, and orienteering tasks—all designed to promote self-motivation and a sense of achievement.
Extra-Curricular Activities
The St Andrew’s extra-curricular sports programme complements our students’ academic and social development. It provides opportunities for pupils to explore and develop skills outside the regular classroom setting. Participation is voluntary and activities take place after school. Above all, enjoyment is key - students are encouraged to take part with enthusiasm and to strive for their personal best, reinforcing the maxim: "You only get out of life what you put into it."
A dedicated team of skilled coaches supports all sports in our extra- curricular programme, helping students develop proficiency, teamwork, and a love for physical activity.
Hockey
Our hockey programme is vibrant and competitive, welcoming students of all skill levels. With expert coaching, pupils learn the fundamentals of the game and develop teamwork and tactical understanding. Students take part in the Leinster Primary Schools Leagues every year.
