Aims

St Andrew’s College physical education department aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop competence and confidence in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • Become physically literate and develop a wide variety of functional movement skills.
  • Understand the value of lifelong physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Develop coping skills (resilience) to deal with challenges.
  • Take responsibility to protect and promote their wellbeing.

Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding that enables a student to value and participate in physical activity throughout life. 

Junior Cycle

Students have a timetable allocation of one compulsory double period per week, totalling 80 minutes of Physical Education.

Students follow the NCCA Junior Cycle Physical Education, specification, consisting of three stands; movement competency, safe and ethical participation, lifelong engagement, and two classroom based assessments. Activity areas of games, gymnastics, athletics, dance, and health-related activity are experienced by students.

Transition Year

Students are timetabled for one triple period of PE per week. During the compulsory triple period, students follow NCCA framework for senior cycle physical education. Students experience outward bounds activities such as, kayaking, climbing, hillwalking, and orienteering.

Senior Cycle
All students have a timetable allocation of one double period per week, totalling 80 minutes of Physical Education. During the compulsory double period, students follow the NCCA framework for senior cycle physical education. Six curriculum models are explored through the activity areas of table tennis, Gaelic games, dance, football, yoga, and strength and conditioning.
