Sports leadership, and the role of the captain, is a critical element for team success. Effective leaders can have a significant impact on team strategy, decision making and team cohesion. Successful captains must possess strong communication skills, demonstrating the ability to inspire and motivate teammates. They should role model team standards by showcasing dedication, discipline, and a positive attitude both on and off the field. Captains need to be strategic thinkers, capable of making effective decisions under pressure and fostering a collaborative team environment. Building mutual respect and trust within the team ensures that captains can effectively guide their peers toward common goals and collective achievements.

The aim of the student sport leadership program is to support current leaders in their role and to prepare emerging leaders to step in to the leadership challenge. The program explores the aims, process and behaviours of effective leadership. The leaders are encouraged to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses in effectively support the teams they lead. They will develop their own style of leadership and are encouraged to grow into the role in a manner that is most appropriate to them.
