Next-Gen Coding & Digital Literacy
Powered by YoungMinds Coding Academy at St. Andrew’s College Junior School

At St. Andrew’s College Junior School, technology education goes beyond basic screen time. Delivered by YoungMinds Coding Academy, our weekly coding/ICT curriculum transforms students from passive technology consumers into active digital creators.

Our progressive, hands-on pathway equips students from K1 to P6 with the computational thinking, engineering logic, and real-world coding skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world.

The Learning Pathway
Phase 1: Computational Thinking & Digital Crafting (K1 – P1)

  • Interactive Learning Suites: Navigating GCompris to build spatial reasoning, early maths logic, and foundational hardware control.

  • Hardware Mechanics: Trackpad precision, mouse navigation, physical keyboard familiarity, and device care.

  • Unplugged Algorithms: Hands-on puzzle solving, pattern recognition, and sequential logic without screen fatigue.

  • Digital Citizenship: Basic privacy protocols, identity protection, and healthy screen habits.

Phase 2: Physical Computing & Creative Coding (P2 – P4)

  • Block Programming & Logic: Drag-and-drop software development using Scratch and MakeCode Microbit to construct event-driven games and animations.

  • Micro-Hardware & Smart Sensors: Programming BBC micro:bits to build physical gadgets, smart sensors, and wearable technology.

  • Touch-Typing Mastery: Systematic speed and ergonomics training using Tux Typing.

  • Spatial Design & 3D CAD: Fundamentals of 3D drafting and digital shape manipulation in Tinkercad.

Phase 3: Game Engine Architecture & Advanced Design (P5 – P6)

  • Retro Game Engineering: Programming 2D arcade physics, collision mechanics, and custom logic in MakeCode Arcade, playtested on hardware using 8BitDo Controllers.

  • Real-World Syntax: Transitioning to authentic Python syntax alongside web markup (HTML5 & CSS3).

  • 3D Architecture & Spatial Modeling: Multi-part assemblies, environment design, and digital architecture using Sketchup.
