Professor Peter Gatenby

1923 - 2015

The death has taken place of Professor Peter Gatenby who attended St Andrew's College in its two previous locations at St Stephen's Green and Clyde Road.  He left school in 1941 and went on to become the first full-time professor of medicine at Trinity College Dublin and director of the United Nations Medical Service.  Born in Dublin, he was the son of James Brontë Gatenby, who was on one of the first Boards of Management of St Andrew's.  Peter was proud of his family connection with the Brontë family, being descended from a brother of Patrick Brontë, father of Charlotte, Emily and Anne.
