Supervised Study During the School day
Except at break times, students should either be in class or in Supervised Study. Supervised Study takes place in the Dining Hall or in designated classrooms. Students who have a free class are expected to arrive in Supervision on time, with their books, ready for study. No talking is permitted. Students are required to study independently so as not to disturb others. Should students fail to behave properly they may be excluded. This will count as a Class Exclusion (see Class Exclusion below) and incur the same penalties.

This year we are improving the supervision system by arranging for specially appointed teachers to provide tuition in their own subject(s) to classes whose teachers are temporarily absent.

Our policy with regard to teacher absences is to provide a combination of supervision and teaching in the short term and, in the case of longer absences, to fill the vacancy with a suitably qualified substitute teacher.

Supervised Study after school
With the consent of their parents, students may remain after school to complete homework or to study under the supervision of a teacher. Supervised Study will be available for pupils on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, starting at 4.15 p.m. and finishing at 6.00 p.m. A light snack will be provided at 4.00pm. The supervising teacher will monitor each student and provide assistance where possible. Parents will receive a progress report every term. Students wishing to avail of this service should fill in the form sent to parents and return it to the College. There is a charge for this facility of €240 per term.

Home Study
Home study is an integral part of school life. It provides valuable opportunities for students to consolidate what they have been taught in class and to test their understanding of the material involved.

Teachers may specify study topics or require students to undertake written assignments. Students must keep a record of all such assignments in their school diary. Assignments completed should be for the correct day. They should be carefully and properly written or learned. Teachers have the right to impose sanctions if students do not comply with these requirements.

It is difficult to say how long a student should spend on home study. It is suggested that First and Second Years should spend approximately 90 minutes per night. Older students should study for approximately 150 minutes each night. As examinations approach, more time may need to be spent on revision of work undertaken earlier in the year.

Teachers will encourage students to assume responsibility for their own programme of study and will assist in this process. It is important that students develop an ownership of their study programme which will enable them to combine revision, set homework and independent study in the most productive way.
