Sanctions
It is important for students to realize that unsatisfactory behaviour is always likely to result in negative consequences. The College operates a range of sanctions which are implemented if students fail to live up to the behavioural standards expected of them. Minor instances of misbehaviour are recorded on 'purple slips'. The information they contain is reviewed weekly by the Deputy Principal, Year Heads and Form Teachers. Where it is considered appropriate a suitable sanction will be imposed.
In all cases the College is committed to ensuring to the best of its ability that the principals of natural justice and due process are observed.
The following sanctions are currently in use:
a) Reprimand
Frequently it is only necessary to point out the inappropriate behaviour to the student and the situation is resolved
b) Impositions
Teachers may impose individual sanctions appropriate to the misbehaviour. These may include written exercises or some form of community work in the College.
c) School Detentions
These are given for more serious infringements of school rules and are given only by the Form Teachers. Detentions are held on Wednesdays and last for 90 minutes (2.00 p.m.-3.30 p.m.).
Private detentions are given by individual teachers at their discretion to students who fail to complete reasonable and appropriate assignments or who behave in an inappropriate manner in the teacher's class. 24-hour notice is given for such detentions.
d) Class exclusions
Occasionally teachers find it necessary to exclude a student from class. This generally arises when the student's behaviour is such that it prevents other students from learning. Teachers will often have imposed other sanctions before deciding to exclude the offending student. A student who is excluded from class must report to the person in charge of supervised study in the dining room. Exclusion from class incurs an automatic detention. This is to emphasise the point that disruptive or uncooperative behaviour adversely affects the right of other students to learn. Second and third exclusions from class will result in a week's suspension from the class in which the misbehaviour occurred. A fourth exclusion will result in complete suspension from the College for a week.
Parents are informed in writing of each exclusion and will be required to assist in seeking a resolution of the problem. Parents' input in reaching a resolution and in assenting to the imposition of appropriate sanctions is an accepted part of the process. The College reserves the right to make final decisions.
e) Temporary Suspension
A student may be sent home for serious misbehaviour pending an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident or incidents. This may take up to 5 school days and will involve the team of teachers responsible for the student in conjunction with his or her parents.
f) Suspension
A student may be suspended for a fixed period or indefinitely depending on the outcome of investigations. Parents' input in reaching a resolution and in implementing appropriate sanctions is an accepted part of the process. The College reserves the right to make final decisions
g) Expulsion
In exceptional circumstances, and following consultation with parents, it may be necessary to expel a student from the College.
The College reserves the right to make such a decision in the interests of the student community as a whole.
h) Appeal
Parents may appeal decisions of the College to the Board.
