Italian Department
Italian is offered in St. Andrew's College as a 10 week module to students in Transition Year as part of their European Studies course.
The course covers an introduction to the language and provides students with the necessary tools for a tourist to Italy (ordering food, booking a room, asking for directions, etc).
The cultural component includes a detailed study of Venice (history, geography, architecture, festivals, etc), an introduction to Italian opera, a study of Italy's role in the Second World War, an examination of the Mafia's role in Italy and also consists of practical classes in Italian cooking.
Assessment is based on detailed project work and periodic testing based on language and culture topics.
